I am totally obsessed with my phone and it literally no less than five feet from at all times. I love the convenience of having my whole world in the palm of my hand. However this smart phone is almost too smart for me when it suggest apps I might like and possible songs to download. I can't really be mad since I am consenting patron of their algorithm. Which is why it is important to think: Who does the internet think I am?
If I were to look back to the beginning of all my social media accounts, including my very embarrassing MySpace account, there would be strongly mixed message. At the beginning I was a moody preteen who "no one understood" and loved skinny jeans, duck faced selfies, constantly played FOB and New Boyz. Fast forward just two year where I had a new love of fashion, 80s and 90s music, and political activism. Back then it would casually suggest things I may or may not like but with more advanced algorithms to where now everything I click is something I must like. For example I was looking at a pair of sunglasses on amazon and on my Pandora Radio an ad for those exact sunglasses popped up.
If I were to look at myself today in what would come up I would be a Pro-Black, independent, feminist, fashion fan, music loving, millennial, college student. That's just a wide perspective with a more in depth look I seem like I am a very indecisive person. From the things I share to the things I search I have already been labeled by corporations, the government, and my phone.
I know I am being watched and my information is shared with every big industry I can think of. I just can't help myself from like a picture on Instagram to sharing a video on Facebook. We are all connected and we are all labeled all that matter is how I perceive myself.
